The Presbyterian Church founded Davidson College in 1837 on largely rural agricultural land. The college would eventually run like a community in itself with its own government and police. By 1879, this area became known as Davidson College, which evolved into simply being named Davidson in 1891. The name Davidson came from local war hero, Brigadier General William Lee Davidson.
