The Lake Norman Train refers to the commuter rail service being developed as part of the Red Line project. Led by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), this initiative aims to create a rail route linking Uptown Charlotte to the northern Lake Norman region, including towns such as Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson. The proposed 25-mile rail line aims to ease traffic congestion on I-77 while providing a faster and more dependable transit option for residents traveling between the Lake Norman area and Charlotte.
CATS initially proposed placing a station south of Catawba Avenue in Cornelius, near the Dunkin’ location, with a parking deck planned next to Harris Teeter. However, the site was ultimately found to be too small to accommodate the needed facilities. Consequently, CATS is now considering a new location north of Catawba Avenue, between Zion Avenue and Railroad Street, near Barley Market. This new site offers ample space for station infrastructure and parking.
The Red Line is deemed to boost regional connectivity and economic development. Additionally, it would improve public transportation access for those living in the Lake Norman area and surrounding communities.
